Dr. Vu Phan

Currently, Dr. Phan holds the esteemed position of Medical Director and CEO at the Cancer & Blood Specialty Clinic. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Phan leads a fulfilling life with his family. Dr. Phan finds joy in spending quality time with his loved ones, engaging in outdoor activities, and pursuing his hobbies. An avid skier, snowboarder, road biker, and mountain biker, he enjoys the thrill of the outdoors. He then completed his residency training in internal medicine at the University of Southern California, followed by a fellowship in hematology and oncology. Dr. Thara is a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the California Medical Association. Dr. Thara has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of Cancers. He provides his patients access to the latest diagnostic testing and molecular next-generation sequencing, including liquid biopsies, and hence is able to get patients matched to personalized care, including clinical trials. Dr. Nguyen grew up in Southern California and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in Psychobiology. He volunteered to teach English to elementary students before attending medical school in Philadelphia at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He completed his internal medicine residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco before finishing a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Dr. Nguyen uses a multifaceted approach to cancer care for his patients and their needs, rather than focusing only on their illness. He has won several awards and honors, including the Healing Hands Award at Loma Linda Medical Center. Dr. Nguyen has published several peer reviewed journal articles and abstracts.

Dr. Shum has over 20 years of experience in the field of oncology, and he has a deep understanding of the latest cancer treatments and clinical trials. He has conducted over 350 Clinical trials as a principal investigator and sub-investigator and has helped to obtain several FDA drug approvals. He is a compassionate and dedicated physician who is committed to providing his patients with the best possible care.
Dr. Shum received his medical degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. He completed his Fifth Pathway Program at New York Medical College. He completed his residency in internal medicine at UMDNJ- RWJMS at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. He then completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. Dr. Shum is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American College of Physicians. He was an adjunct clinical assistant professor at the Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, PA, and a clinical instructor at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, CA.
Dr. Shum is a highly respected oncologist who has been recognized for his clinical excellence and his commitment to patient care. He has received numerous awards, including the Arthur P. Gold Foundation Excellence in Humanism and Teaching Award, the Golden Apple Teaching Award, and the Teaching Resident of the Year Award. He has 27 publications in leading medical journals, including the Proceedings American Journal of Clinical Oncology, Blood, Advance Experimental Medical Biology, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Hematology Transfusion and Cell Therapy, British Journal of Haematology, Cancer Research, American Journal of Medicine, Cerebrovascular Disease and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. He received the Rising Star award and Super Doctors award from the Los Angeles Magazine annually since 2013. He was selected Top Doctor by California Magazine in 2021.

Dr. Farjami’s journey in medicine was profoundly influenced by the loss of his mother to multiple myeloma when he was just 16 years old. This personal experience has deeply shaped his compassionate approach to patient care and his dedication to advancing treatment options.
Dr. Farjami’s career has taken him to diverse institutions and locations, enriching his medical practice with a broad spectrum of experiences. He holds quadruple board certifications in Oncology, Hematology, Internal Medicine, and Geriatric Medicine. He is especially interested in geriatric oncology. Dr. Farjami earned his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, completed his internship in Internal Medicine at New York Medical College, pursued a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Albert Einstein School of Medicine, and completed a Hematology-Oncology fellowship at New York Medical College.
At St. Mary’s Medical Center, Dr. Farjami is currently serving as Chair of the Cancer Committee and has served as Medical Director for Hematology-Oncology Services, Chair of the Department of Medicine, and Teaching Head for the Hematology-Oncology residency program. At UCLA, he served as a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and at City of Hope, he served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine for three years. His extensive teaching roles highlight his deep commitment to education and the advancement of medical knowledge. Dr. Farjami values the importance of educating the next generation of physicians and continually integrates this passion into his practice. Additionally, he has participated as the Principal Investigator and Sub Investigator in over one hundred clinical trials, showcasing his active role in advancing medical research.
On top of his professional achievements, Dr. Farjami is fluent in Farsi and enjoys a range of activities, including reading, skiing, playing soccer and tennis, and spending quality time with his family.

Over the past 20 years of medical practice, my primary goals have always remained the same: to maintain your dignity, improve your quality of life, and extend life expectancy. Each step of your journey is important to me, and I am committed to providing you with personalized, expert care.
I received my Hematology/Oncology fellowship training at Brown University, where I honed the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of cancer care and blood disorders. I also received board certification in Palliative Medicine to enhance my ability to provide holistic patient-centered care. My professional journey brought me to Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles, where I had the honor of serving as Chief of Oncology. During my tenure, I spearheaded the Expert in Cancer Care program, leading subspecialty efforts in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and Sarcoma. I was also actively involved in recruiting patients for clinical trials—a role I plan to continue here at the Cancer and Blood Specialty Clinic to ensure that our patients have access to the latest and most promising treatment options.
In 2024, I was recognized by LA Magazine as one of the top Oncologists in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, an honor bestowed by my esteemed peers. This recognition reflects my unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care and my ongoing dedication to advancing the field of oncology.
